Taking the Stage
From actor to director students in Advanced Acting Lab will find themselves working in every position available in the theatre. Reinforcing acting techniques through rehearsal and learning new techniques in class company members will mount numerous productions for various venues. Emphasis is placed on the total production team including all aspects of technical production and on stage talents. Character development, , script analysis, theatre history research and post production analysis are standard practice. Company members will learn to prepare for college and professional acting auditions during the course of the year.​


What you will learn
  • Understanding of the production team and process. 
  • Acting theory and its practical application on stage. 
  • Development of ensemble building, trust, observation, self confidence, concentration and imagination/creativity. 
  • Stage movement, voice and proficient acting skills. 
  • Various forms of theatrical expression. 
  • Elements of technical theatre. 
  • Observe their environment and respond, using the elements of theatre. 
  • See formal and informal works of theatre and respond, using a vocabulary of theatre. 
  • Use processes and skills in acting, directing, designing, and scriptwriting to create formal and informal theatre productions and to perform in them. 
  • Analyze the role and development of theatre in past and present cultures throughout the world, noting diversity. 
  • Critique and derive meaning from works of theatre and theatrical artists on the basis of aesthetic qualities. 
  • Apply what is learned in theatre to other subject and life skills areas. ​

Requirements and Projects

Projects:
Graded assignments will focus on the areas below.
Performing: Monologues, Scenes, One Acts, Improvisations and anything else we put on stage. ​

Written
: Playwriting, Performance Reviews, Character & Script Analysis 

Production Elements: Make Up, Puppetry, Stage Combat, Props, Costumes, Publicity, Set Design, the list is endless.

​Digital/Classroom Ethics: We will develop these together week one. 



​Class Requirements 
  • Attend class and fully participate daily. You must be able to show your face to your classmates. 
  • Complete assigned tasks by deadlines, 
  • Improve knowledge of the theatre arts as an artist. 
  • Project a positive and respectful attitude toward the class and instructor. 
  • Commit to the class and outside requirements. 
Behavior Expectations 
  • Respect everyone and our space at all times. Digital citizenship and kindness are expected.
  • Enjoy what you do safely! Do not set the living room on fire. 
  • Bad attitudes, food and drinks stay outside. We don't want to watch you on cam having a feast.
  • Consequences: (1) Warning, (2) Sit Out/kicked out of conference, (3) Parent Contact (4) Referral 
  • Breaking School Rules: as prescribed by the student handbook, you will be punished accordingly. 
Materials 
  • We will attempt to be 100% digital. I may ask you to draw, color, make a hat from garbage, but nothing out of the ordinary that you don't already, most likely have. If you don't have it, I'll get it to you. 

Grade Scale & Overview

Grading: Category Expectations

The 5 Score
A grade - superior, high quality work. Completes all assignments, shows originality and initiative, does more than required, is always attentive, and contributes positively to the class.  Exceeding most and meeting all Advanced CA Standards in Theatre Arts. 

The 4 Score

B grade - positive accomplishment that is above the average. Completes most assignments, shows a desire to do better, attentive and participatory in class. Meeting  Most Advanced and Exceeding All Proficient CA Standards in Theatre Arts. 

The 3 Score

C grade - acceptable, average understanding of standards. Generally completes most assignments, shows interest in work, is usually attentive in class, completes work on time. Meeting Proficient CA Standards in Theatre Arts. 

The 2 Score

D grade - more effort is needed to meet standards of this course. Completes a minimum of assignments, not attentive in class and seldom responds in class.  Not meeting all Proficient CA Standards in Theatre Arts. 

​The 1 Score

F grade - Produces unacceptable assignments or none at all. Not attentive in class and is disruptive. Meets less than half of Proficient CA Standards in Theatre Arts.

Performing: Monolog/Scene Work: 50% of Grade
Throughout the year, you will be assigned performance pieces for in class study.  All performances must be memorized by the due date.  Work not memorized will not be scored higher than F. 

Theatre/ Digital Ethics: 10% of Grade
Behavior and Ethical participation will be part of the overall grade and you will be given a score every 6 weeks. Warmup and rehearsal time fall into this category and should never be taken lightly or wasted.

Written Work: 20% of Grade
All work will be submitted through either Canvas or published on the playwriting software celtx.com

Production Attendance: Performance/Audition: 20% of Grade
You are required to be in or attend ALL Lincoln Theatre productions and one approved LHS Dance or Music Production . Students in the production will get the same credit as if they attended. The 2020-21 Season is TBA based on the health situation of our area.  The One Acts are STILL the final projects for the second semester and participation is not optional. We will either record and stream them or possibly be able to have an audience. TBA around April 1. 
 
Extra Credit will be offered at the teacher’s discretion.

Late Work
should be made up within 15 days of the original due date or before the semester ends if less than 15 days.

THE CONCTRACT
Boxed In Theatre Company
is an advanced performance ensemble requiring a great deal of devotion from everyone. This agreement is a requirement for but does not guarantee casting. 
  • BITCO is a full year course, members are expected to remain in the class the entire year
  • All members are expected to be enrolled in Musical Theatre, audition for all LHS mainstage shows, and perform in a one act. 
  • Athletics and other on campus commitments can be worked around and bargained with.  We can be flexible but not a clear second choice.
  • Ensemble atmosphere is a must for the success of what we do. Members are expected to always participate in collegial harmony with one another. 
  • Cliques within the company are not tolerated.  Attitudes that divide the group are not tolerated. 
  • Dating within the group is a conflict of interest and can be cause for dismissal of both students should it become a problem. 
  • You are expected to reflect the highest standards of all theatre ethics at all times.  Positive image on and off campus is important. 
  • Questionable activities off campus shall not be in the name of the company. There are no “BITCO” cast parties or sleep-overs.
  • Communication: We will use BAND
  • If you’re not here, we can’t rehearse. Try your best to be at school and provide a 10 day warning for all absences. 
  • Missing a performance is grounds for dismissal from the group. 
  • You must be in class 4 consecutive periods during the day to perform. 
  • Our class time on a mainstage performance day changes to the call time for that show. This means we will not have a class on the same night as a show. 
  • The Performing Arts Calendar is on line at www.lincolnperformingarts.com. Your outside commitments must not interfere with scheduled performances, rehearsals or meetings at any time. Failure to work out your schedule with outside activities more than twice is grounds for dismissal from the group. 
  • Being assigned AIM because of attendance problems and missing rehearsal will result in being pulled from a performance and can be grounds for dismissal from the group. 
  • Group planned activities are not optional. You need to be available given advanced notice. 
  • All company members must maintain a GPA of no less than a 2.0 and no more than 2 F’s. Failing to meet this requirement two grading period consecutively is grounds for dismissal. 
  • Students with a D or F in a class are required to attend advisory and or Home-Work-Center for that class until the grade is raised. NO EXCEPTIONS 
  • All deficiencies must be cleared in order to perform or travel. 
  • You are expected to purchase or fundraise for uniforms and costumes for the shows you are in. 

 THIS CONTRACT IS ON FILE FOR ALL STUDENTS CURRENTLY ENROLLED AND IS PROVIDED HERE FOR YOUR REFERENCE.

This class will be tailored to the people in it.  It’s doesn’t matter where you begin . . . it’s where you end up that makes all the difference. ​
Tours & Trips
NYC TOUR - Summer 2021

If possible, we will take the trip we were scheduled to take in Spring of 2020. As a member of this class you are eligible and invited to attend the Theatre Tour. There may be open spots for this tour. I will announce when those are available to buy. The cost of the tour is $2800.
